ACL Tear
Criteria-based ACL rehabilitation to restore strength, stability, and a confident return to sport.
Signs & Symptoms
A 'pop' at the time of injury, often during cutting, pivoting, or landing
Rapid swelling within the first few hours
A feeling of instability or the knee 'giving way'
Difficulty fully straightening or bearing weight
Loss of confidence with cutting and deceleration
If you suspect an ACL injury, get assessed promptly — early management sets up a smoother recovery.
How We Treat It
Care progresses through clear phases: restoring range of motion and quad control, rebuilding strength and single-leg capacity, then layering in plyometrics, sprinting, and sport-specific cutting.
Objective strength and hop testing to guide every progression
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training to build strength while protecting the healing knee
Progressive return-to-run and sprint programming
Sport-specific agility and reactive drills before clearance
Recovery Timeline
Post-surgical ACL rehab typically spans roughly 9–12 months to full return to sport, progressed by criteria rather than the calendar. Non-surgical cases vary based on the athlete's goals and knee stability.
Phase 1 (0–6 wks): protect the graft, restore motion and quad activation
Phase 2 (6 wks–4 mo): progressive strengthening and single-leg control
Phase 3 (4–7 mo): running progression, power, and plyometrics
Phase 4 (7–12 mo): sprinting, cutting, and criteria-based return to sport
Do I need surgery for an ACL tear?
Not always. Some athletes do well with structured non-surgical rehab, while others — especially those returning to high-level cutting sports — choose reconstruction. The decision is made with your surgeon, and we support you either way.
When can I return to my sport?
Return is based on objective criteria — strength symmetry, hop testing, and completion of a sprint and cutting progression — not just time. Most reconstructions return around 9–12 months.
Do you take insurance?
Swift is out-of-network and cash-based, which means longer one-on-one sessions with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. We provide a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
ACL Rehabilitation at Swift
An ACL tear is one of the most significant injuries an athlete can face, but with the right rehabilitation a strong, confident return to sport is absolutely achievable. Whether you're recovering from ACL reconstruction or managing a partial tear without surgery, Swift builds your program around your sport, your timeline, and objective data — not a generic protocol.
Every session is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, so your loading, progressions, and return-to-sport testing are guided from start to finish.
